Eastern Small Eyed Snake (Cryptophis nigrescens) Shortly after placing our packs on the ground after a long hike through Lamington National Park, I returned to my friend saying that a snake had slithered right by him as he sat on this steps nearby the camp site, and there it stayed for over twenty minutes until it decided to slither away. This predominantly nocturnal Elapid feeds on small lizards and their eggs, small snakes and occasionally frogs. Being a rainforest species the Small Eyed Snake may also make its home in well watered suburban gardens throughout south east Queensland, and is often mistaken for the Red-Bellied Black Snake.
