Lace Monitor (Varanus varius) Mount Barney, Queensland, Australia
After significant rain and flooding in the Brisbane region a fortnight ago, frog species that spawn in temporary bodies of water gathered to breed. In something of a boom and bust situation, those that mate and lay their eggs en masse early have a good chance of passing on their genes. Those offspring that are not laid early unluckily must face the survival of the fittest in quickly diminishing muddy water. This squirming mass was photographed in a conservation area in the North of Brisbane, where the nearby public use areas were heavily damaged by flood waters and debris.
